Random Acts of Kindness

Wow we have had so many snow days lately!  I'm not complaining , but at the same time I have so much to teach, I need to see my students!
Before we left for this second arctic blast we put up a random acts of kindness tree in my room.  This year my class has had some struggles getting along and I try to do a lot of community building activities. Basically with this tree students pick a leaf I have precut and write a random act of kindness someone in our room did.  I explained the random acts need to be specific and not vague.  For example instead of saying " ________ helped me" they should say "_________ helped zip up my jacket when it was stuck."
The kids are aloud to write on the leafs in the morning, during recess and during pack up time, after they write out their leaf they place it in a basket on my desk and I staple them up.  They are very excited about these!

Back From Break Pack

I can't believe it's already time to go back, wow time flies!  Well today I started to think about my lesson plans and what exactly I'm going to do for the week.  The kids are usually so excited to come back and tell me about their adventures over break so I wanted to include time for a writing piece on Monday. Our schools 8 week regional assessment is coming up so I definetley want to see what needs to be reviewed in math.  I made this FREEBIE which incorporates a writing piece, a math review and a reading comprehension component!

I hope it is useful to you!

Winter Door

Happy New Year!  Before we left for winter break my classroom decorated our door.  Im working on building community in my classroom, and after hearing about some of my other team-mates ideas I came up with these snowmen.  Each polkadot has an adjective that describes each students personality. Students cut out a circle (polkadot) for each student in the room.  After brainstorming a long list of positive character traits I had the students write a trait on each polkadot for each student!  The kids had a great time with this activity and they loved seeing what other students thought of them! After all who doesn't like hearing kind things about themselves!  Take a look below to see how they turned out!

**By the way I got the cute saying on the door from somewhere else, I just edited it a bit!**

What do you do in your classroom to build community?
